As part of the lecture series Best Available Copy 4 - the preservation of time-based media art ...documentation as a copy, we will invite you to a lecture by Tzu-Chuan Lin on 24.04.24 at 6pm online: http://tinyurl.com/zoom-to-BAC
Tzu-Chuan Lin: Experiment with a visual documentation method for Max/MSP-based artworks
In the conservation of software-based artworks, source code is usually thought of as a copy or document of the work. However, software such as Max/MSP - a visual programming language - mostly comprises block connections in the graphical interface without textual source code. Therefore, how to thoroughly document this type of software-based artworks becomes a question. This talk presents an experimental visual documentation method, which is an application of the 4+1 view model combined with UML, to capture the work defining properties from different perspectives.

Carolin Bohlmann has been Chair of the Institute and Professor for Conservation-Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna since February 2020. Based on her many years of practical professional experience and research into the conservation of modern and contemporary art, her academic research topics are primarily focused on conservation practice and its documentation. There are interfaces that are of central importance for the work of the Academy as a whole: Concepts and fields of practice such as reproduction, repetition, process art, immateriality, institutional critique, sustainability.
Over the past four years, she has been able to deepen four key research areas as part of her teaching and research activities. These include international, currently relevant fields of research that transdisciplinary expand the field of conservation-restoration and promote an intensive linking of university and museum knowledge spaces: the conservation-restoration of time-based media works; conceptual art and its (im)material transmission; preserving process art; material culture of conservation.
Carolin Bohlmann is working on future research projects – for example on documentation methods in conservation – which she will discuss in her lecture.
I look forward to welcoming you to the lecture and to drink a toast to this occasion!
Best regards
Johan Hartle

Abstract
Was bedeutet "Gestaltung" aus minoritärer Sicht?

PASS(ED) ON - Narrativization of vernacular archives within intergenerational and transnational memory transfer
This three-day symposium at the University of Arts Linz, Austria, deals with vernacular and family archives from the 20th century. Throughout three panels and a round table, we present different academic and artistic research projects that investigate distinct modes of intergenerational and transnational memory transfer. The archives they deal with are addressed as places of storage, of consignment and visibility, but also of concealment of power over history, histories and discourse. The different research projects and positions assembled in PASS(ED) ON represent a broad spectrum of theoretical and practice-based methodologies of examining archives, stemming from cultural sciences, artistic research and memory studies.
The vernacular and family archives under investigation exist as organic bodies of collected documents, oral histories and different kinds of memorabilia. These media objects are generally assembled and stored according to autobiographical and idiosyncratic criteria. The focus of PASS(ED) ON lays upon how to reflect, relate to and reproduce the collective social processes in which they exist and, at the same time, to see in which ways they transcend them. By focusing on these archives’ specific operational mechanisms, and by acknowledging them as places for the articulation of lived and transmitted experience with macro-political and historical dimensions, the interest of this symposium is to inquire about the way they entangle with institutionalized and cultural memory.
Each panel of PASS(ED) ON – 1. The mute archive: Post generational work on violence and perpetration within concealed archives; 2. Migrating memories: Intergenerational transfer of material narratives in the contexts of migration and 3. Inherited Revolution: Privatization and intergenerational transfer of narratives of collective upheaval – addresses vernacular archives through different historical and contextual focal points which bring together diverse methodologies to critically inform us on the different collective processes at stake and on the routes of their transfers of memory. With the round table From the attic to the museum: inscribing vernacular archives into collective history, we venture into a presentation and discussion of different projects in which vernacular archives undergo a process of institutionalization and of inscription into historiography and collective history.
PASS(ED) ON is conceived by Ana de Almeida, Lena Ditte Nissen and Elif Süsler-Rohringer as part of their DOC-Team project “Stay and tell: memory objects and narratives of appropriation. Tracing social change in text, photographs and patterns within personal archives” which is funded by the ÖAW – Austrian Academy of the Sciences<https://www.oeaw.ac.at/oesterreichische-akademie-der-wissenschaften>. A workshop with Sara Hassan
The workshop is for individuals who identify as BIPoC.
Thursday, May 23rd, 10.30 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.
Room DG18 (Top Floor), building of the institute for Education in the Arts, Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse 3, 1070 Wien
Power abuse is not a single-issue problem. Marginalized people disproportionately become targets of harassment, sexual and otherwise, and not by accident. How do various forms of oppression interact here? How does racism, sexism, queerphobia and other forms of discrimination work together to effectively push people out of systems? How are these dynamics reflected in perpetrators' strategies, bystander actions, and systemic patterns? In this workshop, we will work through a tailored case study from a BIPOC perspective to identify the escalation levels of harassment and look at how various discriminatory dynamics come into play when people become targets. How and where does power abuse start, how can we identify early warning signs and develop an intersectional understanding of power abuse and harassment?
This is an interactive workshop with practical examples. We would like to invite you to send specific case studies, red flags/warning signs, or patterns that you have noticed to the workshop leader: kontakt(a)sarahassan.at<mailto:kontakt@sarahassan.at>. All cases will be treated completely confidentially, only patterns will be used to illustrate the specific case study.
