Investigative Aesthetics — Investigative Poetics
Forensic Procedures in the Contemporary Arts
Guest lecture by Lisa Stuckey
March 13, 2024, 2PM
Department Art and Time | Media, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
Oscillating between scientific and rhetorical evidence, the inquiries by Forensic Architecture have been putting notions of arts and aesthetics, law and justice to the test for more than a decade. Emerging research branches into diverse transdisciplinary currents, one of which explores media-historic and theory-political genealogies of “investigative aesthetics”: Drawing from her book Forensische Verfahren in den zeitgenössischen Künsten (De Gruyter 2022), Lisa Stuckey’s guest lecture will elucidate Forensic Architecture’s para-juridical exhibition practice, discussing display strategies and evolving attention economies. Building on this analysis, the research agency’s investigative methodologies will be juxtaposed to those employed by artists such as M. NourbeSe Philip, Constanze Ruhm, and Lawrence Abu Hamdan — revealing a tension between “Investigative Aesthetics” and “Investigative Poetics” within forensic procedures in the contemporary arts.
Dr. Lisa Stuckey is a cultural theorist and art critic. Her work revolves around contemporary visual cultures, forensic art practices, media aesthetics, and critical legal studies. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and pursued her doctorate as fellow of the IFK International Research Center for Cultural Studies with a research appointment at Goldsmiths, University of London. Lisa Stuckey’s research has led to fellowships and lecturer posts at, amongst others, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Legal Studies at the University of Lucerne, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich, and the University of Arts Linz. Currently, she is senior scientist in the project “Transform” at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. In spring/summer 2024, she will be a fellow at the Käte Hamburger Centre for Advanced Study “inHerit. Heritage in Transformation” in Berlin.

Dear all!
we are very much looking forward to seeing you all soon again after the semester break next wednesday March 6th at 14.00 in media class.
Here are a few updates and prospects for the upcoming semester.
We will continue to focus on the subject of the representation of violence, and in light of the ongoing wars and violence particularly in connection with the situation in the Middle East we will focus especially on the group Forensic Architecture and their work. During our first class meeting, I will give a brief introduction to Forensic Architecture. On March 13th, we will host a guest lecture by Lisa Stuckey on the subject of forensic methodologies in connection with contemporary art practices (a separate and extensive announcement will follow soon). Planned are as well, exchanges with colleagues in Academy such as Prof. Carolin Bohlmann, head of the department of restoration in regard of her practice in the field of the forensics of restoration.
Further on there will be, at some point in this semester, a lecture by artist Fareed Armaly on a project with the title SHAR(E)D DOMAINS from 2007: Fareed Armaly is an artist and curator whose international career in the arts includes large-scale collaborative works on the theme of Palestine. Invited by the Geneva museum to be the participating artist in its Gaza archaeological exhibition, he created a multifaceted installation titled ““Shar(e)d Domains,”” which uses as its starting point a key artifact on display in the exhibition itself: an ancient Gaza amphora discovered as shards during excavations under the Geneva Cathedral. The centerpiece of his installation is a sculptural representation of the seams resulting from reassembling the shards. Titled ““New Amphora,”” it is simultaneously a faithful replication of the artifact and a strikingly modern and original form.
Last but not least our department is invited by Museumsquartier Wien head curator Verena Kasper for an evening of projects / performances on the outdoor stage in the courtyard of Museumsquartier on June 14th. We will discuss this upcoming project and its possibilities in our next meeting. Finally I would like to announce that Siri Baden is the new Studentische Mitarbeiter*in in our department for the coming two semesters
And last but not least: please note that your presence at class meetings is required and very much appreciated!
Do let us know beforehand if you cannot make it.
All the best
Constanze
Marlies and Axel
