PASS(ED) ON - Narrativization of vernacular archives within intergenerational and transnational memory transfer
This three-day symposium at the University of Arts Linz, Austria, deals with vernacular and family archives from the 20th century. Throughout three panels and a round table, we present different academic and artistic research projects that investigate distinct modes of intergenerational and transnational memory transfer. The archives they deal with are addressed as places of storage, of consignment and visibility, but also of concealment of power over history, histories and discourse. The different research projects and positions assembled in PASS(ED) ON represent a broad spectrum of theoretical and practice-based methodologies of examining archives, stemming from cultural sciences, artistic research and memory studies.
The vernacular and family archives under investigation exist as organic bodies of collected documents, oral histories and different kinds of memorabilia. These media objects are generally assembled and stored according to autobiographical and idiosyncratic criteria. The focus of PASS(ED) ON lays upon how to reflect, relate to and reproduce the collective social processes in which they exist and, at the same time, to see in which ways they transcend them. By focusing on these archives’ specific operational mechanisms, and by acknowledging them as places for the articulation of lived and transmitted experience with macro-political and historical dimensions, the interest of this symposium is to inquire about the way they entangle with institutionalized and cultural memory.
Each panel of PASS(ED) ON – 1. The mute archive: Post generational work on violence and perpetration within concealed archives; 2. Migrating memories: Intergenerational transfer of material narratives in the contexts of migration and 3. Inherited Revolution: Privatization and intergenerational transfer of narratives of collective upheaval – addresses vernacular archives through different historical and contextual focal points which bring together diverse methodologies to critically inform us on the different collective processes at stake and on the routes of their transfers of memory. With the round table From the attic to the museum: inscribing vernacular archives into collective history, we venture into a presentation and discussion of different projects in which vernacular archives undergo a process of institutionalization and of inscription into historiography and collective history.
PASS(ED) ON is conceived by Ana de Almeida, Lena Ditte Nissen and Elif Süsler-Rohringer as part of their DOC-Team project “Stay and tell: memory objects and narratives of appropriation. Tracing social change in text, photographs and patterns within personal archives” which is funded by the ÖAW – Austrian Academy of the Sciences<https://www.oeaw.ac.at/oesterreichische-akademie-der-wissenschaften>. The symposium is generously supported by the University of Arts Linz<https://www.kunstuni-linz.at/en/>, by the Zentrum Fokus Forschung - University of Applied Arts Vienna<https://zentrumfokusforschung.uni-ak.ac.at/> and the Academy of Fine Arts of Vienna<https://www.akbild.ac.at/de>.
Speakers: Andrea Ancira, Vida Bakondy, Ana de Almeida, Georgia Holz, Berthold Molden, Lena Ditte Nissen, Monika Palmberger, Edward Serotta, Elif Süsler-Rohringer, Huda Takriti, Marcela Torres Heredia, Markus Wurzer, Mai Ling.
Moderation: Alison J. Clarke, Karin Harrasser, Gudrun Rath, Mariel Rodríguez Rodríguez
Venue: University of Arts Linz, Hauptplatz 6, 5. OG, Hörsaal C, 4020 Linz / Austria

Genalguacil, Satellitenveranstaltung des New European Bauhaus

ENGLISH:
Genalguacil, satellite event of New European Bauhaus
It becomes the only rural space in Spain to host this festival from 14 to 21 April, which will combine film and cuisine through local knowledge and resources
The municipality of Genalguacil, through its International Rural Innovation Laboratory, is taking part in the second edition of the New European Bauhaus (NEB). Although the direct celebration of the event takes place in Brussels, the Museum Village stands as the only satellite event in a rural area of Spain under the title 'Futures are rural'. From 14 to 21 April, it will become a space for co-production where film and local gastronomy will be the protagonists, based on the experiences and knowledge of the local people.
Throughout the week, a collective of artists, filmmakers, farmers, researchers, policy makers, local youth and local restaurant owners, among others, will cooperate to put together a shared meal, using local resources. In addition to screenings in different parts of the village during the event, there will be decentralised practices to share with other rural regions what is happening: live TV broadcasting and radio podcasting. Challenging stereotypes and innovating from the rural.
The weekend will see a performance by artists Patricio Sota and Irene Lucas from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, which will mark the central activity of the festival. They will cook live in the sunlight with products collected from the natural environment of the municipality, in order to create local recipes shared by the local residents. This will be recorded and documented by Prerna Bishnoi and Gustav Gunvaldsen, professionals from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), as well as the fieldwork and research they will carry out days before. Together with them, the young villagers Nerea and Álvaro Holgado participate in the audiovisual work, both recording and editing, providing experience and training. This translates into a new way of exchanging knowledge and sharing creativity. A film and food festival, combining filmmaking with food making as ways of renewing connections with heritage and nature through art and culture.
LAB - NEB context
The cultural project Genalguacil Pueblo Museo celebrates 30 years sharing the spirit of the NEB and showcasing its values: beautiful, together and sustainable. The celebration of this festival serves as a springboard to disseminate the work of the territorial innovation projects led by Genalguacil with the support of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). LAB Genalguacil works closely with European partners committed to the important role of arts, creativity, culture and heritage in the complex ecological, digital and social transition, and in the fight for justice, diversity, equity and well-being.
The European Union's goal is climate neutrality, which is why the European Green Pact was launched five years ago. To contribute to its implementation, the European Commission created the New European Bauhaus (NEB) to explore ideas, identify the most pressing needs and challenges, and connect stakeholders. This year marks the second edition of the festival which will take place in Brussels with satellite events to be held in other parts of Europe, such as Genalguacil. The event will focus on the theme "Resources for all" exploring sub-themes such as shelter, living environments, land and water, fashion and human well-being in the light of the changing environment.
Starting today, the future is rural!
