Performance: Die Krönung der Hyazintha, 13. Mai 2023
Für Public Matters konzipiert Verena Dengler eine Performance, die sie gemeinsam mit mehreren Akteur*innen am Eröffnungstag realisiert. Dafür wählt sie einen Aufführungsort aus, der aus historischer Sicht kaum bedeutender sein könnte: den Balkon des Oberen Belvedere, auf dem 1955 der unterfertigte Staatsvertrag präsentiert wurde, womit zehn Jahre nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die staatliche Souveränität Österreichs wiederhergestellt war. Im Stil einer „Opera buffa“ halten die Künstlerin und ihre Akteur*innen feierlich Einzug in das Obere Belvedere, wo sie im ersten Obergeschoss zuerst den Ort der Unterzeichnung des Staatsvertrags (Marmorsaal) durchqueren, um schließlich auf dem Balkon eine musikalische Performance aufzuführen, die den unkritischen Umgang Österreichs mit der eigenen Geschichte hinterfragt.

Performance: The Coronation of Hyacintha, May 13, 2023
For Public Matters, 'The Coronation of Hyacintha May 13, 2023 will be realized together by a small cast on opening. The performance site couldnt be more significant from a historical perspective: the balcony of the Upper Belvedere, on which the signed State Treaty, (done in the Marble Hall), was presented in 1955, thus restoring Austria’s state sovereignty ten years after the end of World War II.
Various thematic avenues are opened up: the balcony as an obvious reference to a key moment in Austrian history, and at the same time, Belvedere’s crucial role as the birthplace of the democratic and sovereign Austrian state.
Likewise it points to theAustrian sci-fi comedy 1. April 2000 (1952).Three years before the conclusion of the State Treaty, the film satirically paints a picture of an Austria that is still occupied by the Allied powers in the eponymous year 2000. By resorting to important historical personalities as advocates, among them, the builder of the Belvedere, Prinz Eugen von Savoy, the occupiers are to be convinced of the Austrian people’s peaceful demeanor in this futuristic scenario. Precisely because of its propagandistic tendencies the film initially appeared as an inspiration for the performance, in order to question Austria’s uncritical handling of its own history and the absence of a sense of guilt with regard to World War II.
