Students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna present artistic interventions in the permanent exhibition of the Jewish Museum Vienna. The projects confront voids of the exhibition, which opened in 2013 and bring in a contemporary perspective. They examine continuities of the past in the present, ask at what point the past becomes history and discuss to what extent the present influences our view of the past: What can the museum do to counter the historicization of Jewish life and how can the present be reflected in it? What role does the narration of individual stories of successful families play in the construction of a collective historical narrative? How can marginalized Jewish stories be made visible? What hostilities and precariousness is Jewish life currently confronted with?

The projects were created as part of a course in the Master Critical Studies program at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna taught by Livia Erdösi and Eduard Freudmann.

VERGANGENHEIT VERGEGENWÄRTIGEN - POSITIONEN ZUR DAUERAUSSTELLUNG „UNSERE STADT! JÜDISCHES WIEN VON 1945 BIS HEUTE“

Studierende der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien zeigen künstlerische Interventionen in der Dauerausstellung des Jüdischen Museum Wien. Die Projekte aktualisieren die im Jahr 2013 eröffnete Ausstellung und bearbeiten Leerstellen. Dabei fragen sie auch, wie Vergangenes in der Gegenwart fortwirkt, wann Vergangenes zur Geschichte wird und wie die Gegenwart den Blick auf die Vergangenheit beeinflusst: Was kann das Museum der Historisierung jüdischen Lebens entgegensetzen und wie kann sich die Gegenwart darin abbilden? Welche Rolle spielt das Erzählen einzelner familiärer Erfolgsgeschichten bei der Konstruktion kollektiver Geschichtserzählungen? Wie können marginalisierte jüdische Geschichten sichtbar gemacht werden? Mit welchen Feindseligkeiten und Prekarisierungen ist jüdisches Leben gegenwärtig konfrontiert?

Die Projekte entstanden im Rahmen einer Lehrveranstaltung von Livia Erdösi und Eduard Freudmann im Studiengang Master Critical Studies an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien.
