Carolin Bohlmann hat seit Februar 2020 die Professur für Konservierung-Restaurierung im Fachbereich Moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien inne. Ausgehend von ihrer langjährigen praktischen Berufserfahrung und Forschung zur Konservierung moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst sind ihre wissenschaftlichen Forschungsthemen maßgeblich im Bereich Konservierungspraxis und ihrer Dokumentation angesiedelt. Dabei gibt es Schnittstellen, die für die Arbeit der Akademie insgesamt von zentraler Bedeutung sind: Begriffe und Praxisfelder wie Reproduktion, Wiederholung, Prozesskunst, Immaterialität, Institutionskritik, Nachhaltigkeit.

Vier Forschungsschwerpunkte konnte Carolin Bohlmann in den letzten vier Jahren im Rahmen ihrer Tätigkeit in Lehre und Forschung vertiefen. Diese umfassen internationale, aktuell relevante Forschungsfelder, die das Fachgebiet der Konservierung-Restaurierung transdisziplinär erweitern und eine intensive Verknüpfung von universitären und musealen Wissensräumen vorantreiben: die Konservierung-Restaurierung zeitbasierter Medienarbeiten; konzeptuelle Kunst und ihre (im)materielle Tradierung; Prozesskunst erhalten; materielle Kultur der Konservierung. 

Carolin Bohlmann beschäftigt sich derzeit mit zukünftigen Forschungsvorhaben – etwa zu Dokumentationsmethoden in der Konservierung – worauf sie in ihrem Vortrag eingehen wird.

At the end of the positively decided procedure for the extension of her contract, Carolin Bohlmann will present her ideas and plans for her current and future professional activities at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

 

Preserving what is in motion! Documentation as conservatorial practice

Carolin Bohlmann has been Chair of the Institute and Professor for Conservation-Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna since February 2020. Based on her many years of practical professional experience and research into the conservation of modern and contemporary art, her academic research topics are primarily focused on conservation practice and its documentation. There are interfaces that are of central importance for the work of the Academy as a whole: Concepts and fields of practice such as reproduction, repetition, process art, immateriality, institutional critique, sustainability.

Over the past four years, she has been able to deepen four key research areas as part of her teaching and research activities. These include international, currently relevant fields of research that transdisciplinary expand the field of conservation-restoration and promote an intensive linking of university and museum knowledge spaces: the conservation-restoration of time-based media works; conceptual art and its (im)material transmission; preserving process art; material culture of conservation.

Carolin Bohlmann is working on future research projects – for example on documentation methods in conservation – which she will discuss in her lecture.
